On a day that the legislature passed resolutions honoring law enforcement officers killed last year, the House passed five measures in rapid succession. Two of those bills dealt directly with retirement benefits for LEOFF members and/or their surviving families.
House Bill 2519 is a comprehensive approach to improving the benefits that are provided to the surviving spouse and dependents of LEOFF members killed in the line of duty. This bill passed by a vote of 93 yea, 3 nay, and 2 members were excused. It is the opinion of this organization that the three members who opposed this legislation not only do not deserve our support, but should be opposed in their future endeavors. House Bill 1679 provides medical insurance for our catastrophically disabled LEOFF 2 members and their dependents by reimbursing their premiums for health care insurance. This bill passed with a unanimous vote of 96 yea, 0 nay, and 2 members were excused.
Each of these bills will now be transmitted to the Senate for action in the Ways and Means Committee.
